A Set of Encyclopedias

It’s been many years since I really looked at a set of encyclopedias. Of course, they were important in the recent pre-internet age. I always wanted to acquire a set when supermarkets had a promotion in which you could get one a week for a deal, but never got past the first few.

Of course, it would be impractical to cart a set of encyclopedias around with you. So it’s a wonderful thing that the Bible can contain so much information, like a whole set of encyclopedias, yet can be carried around in an ordinary-sized book. The reason it can is because God doesn’t explain everything in full at every point where explanation is needed. He expects us, instead, to consider what He’s taught on any given matter as those teachings occur throughout His Word. That’s why it’s unwise, and even wrong, to “proof text” — to self-servingly choose a verse or set of verses which seem to support what we believe.
